Pride and Pudding by Regula Ysewijn
I recently discovered a discontinued British food blog run by Belgium national Regula Ysewign. If you're not aware, Ysewign is a foodie writer/historian/photographer who focuses primarily on British cuisine. She has appeared on the Belgian version of Great British Bake Off and in August 2024, Regula was appointed an honorary member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to British food and culture. What drew me to Ys

Crumpet Shortage after Warburton's UK Factory Fire?
During a recent trip to Bonanza Food & Gift, I grabbed a package of Warburtons crumpets from the freezer. Upon check out, the owner mentioned that perhaps I should get two packets, as the recent factory fire may slow down shipments to Canada. Hold the phone, what factory fire? As it turns out, a fire broke out at Warburton's largest crumpet-making factory in early May....oh my! Luckily no one was hurt, but all of those precious crumpets up in flames - it's almost too much to

Yorkshire Pudding is EASY!
Yorkshire Puddings with a Sunday roast.....what's not to love? Did you know you can buy frozen Yorkshire Puddings at Loblaws? You'll find this PC line item in the freezer section. I've seen the price fluctuate from $4.99 to nearly $8.99 for 12 puds. To be clear, the bag weighs in at 185g so those are 12 very small puddings. And while the ingredients aren't bad (basically flour, oil, salt, milk, egg) I just can't get my head around spending money on this particular item. Now t

British Baking Goals
There are certain recipes that I keep coming back to when it comes to British baking: Millionaire's shortbread, Scottish shortbread, scones, Yorkshire pudding (more cooking, I know), Easter cakes, Christmas cake, Sticky Toffee pudding (steamed of course) and the very occasional Battenberg cake. Sticky Toffee Pudding But there are other recipes I think about baking a lot, and never seem to get around to: Flapjacks, Brandy snaps, Victoria sponge, Bakewell tart and various types

The Pudding Club....in Toronto?
The Pudding Club , as you might have guessed, is a group of culinary professionals "dedicated to the preserving the tradition of the great British Pudding". I've been following The Pudding Club on Facebook for several years now, and from what I can garner from their posts, once a month or so, they host a pudding club night where the kitchen produces several different traditional puddings and you get to try them all, buffet style. Think Jam Roly-Poly, Sticky Toffee pudding, Ev

I Made a Battenberg Cake!
For some, this may not be a very satisfying challenge. I've heard some say Battenberg is an easy cake to make, which is somewhat true: It's a straightforward sponge cake recipe, sliced into four, then stuck together with apricot jam. And if you're not in the mood to make your own almond paste, you could buy it from a European food store, or a Bulk Barn perhaps. Then you just need to roll it out, and wrap it around. I think where I struggle, is I was used to eating the Mr. K

Easter Chocolate is Here!
Easter is almost here, and that means....the UK Easter Chocolate is here! I happened to be in Milton a few days ago, so popped into La Rose to see what was happening on the shelves. Aside from Mr. Kipling mini Battenbergs for $7.99 (amazing sale price), they also had a complete wall of Easter Eggs when you walk through the door: I've never even thought to try the Guinness egg...does it actually taste like beer? Since it's front and centre I'm assuming that means it's a sough
